Human nature tells us that if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. But when it comes to large scale appliances within your home, you may actually be costing yourself more headache than it’s worth when you think about the money you might be spending in higher electric bills and less production efficiency with your old appliance.
A fallacy of our nature is to keep our appliances, televisions, dishwashers, washing machines and most other appliances until they completely stop working. It wouldn’t be too over the top if you learned that someone in your family still has a harvest gold oven or an olive green fridge. Appliances, after all, are a resource tool in your home that sometimes can keep on ticking for years and years.
But at what expense?
It’s hard to know when to replace an old appliance. Spotty, unclean dishes, an oven that takes twice as long to bake, a dryer that after running for an hour still leaves your towels damp—these should be clear signs that it’s time. The thought process behind not spending the money to replace the appliance until the time comes has valid points. But with the exceptional selections of appliances on the market today, that thought process can easily be overcome…and for good reason.
Often keeping an older, less energy-efficient appliance causes higher electric bills and lower quality work. If you have noticed that your appliances are not operating as they once did, then it may be time to consider newer, more efficient appliances. As a rule of thumb, if your appliance is reaching the ten-year-old mark, it usually does make sense to buy a new one.
Another reason to consider replacing old appliances with newer models, besides the lower electric bill and better quality output, is that today’s models and colors are quieter, quicker, sleeker and just simply so much cooler looking. You can buy appliances to match the overall style of your space whereas just in the near past, the choices were bulkier and either came in white, black, or stainless. Today’s appliances are created with various styles in mind.
The upfront cost of replacing old appliances that is not yet broken may seem high, but remember you will save in the long run with a lower energy bill and most definitely, less hassle. Keep in mind that in some cases, you can resell your old appliance for a “rebate” on the upfront cost of the new one.
